As a songwriter, I believe there is an important distinction between creating a song and producing a song. Every song I write begins long before any collaborator is involved. I write the lyrics, but just as importantly, I compose the melody entirely in my mind. I sing the song repeatedly, sometimes hundreds of times, until every verse, chorus, bridge, and vocal inflection is fully formed. Before any other human or technology enters the process, the song already exists as a complete musical work in my head. When utilizing AI, it does not invent my songs. It helps me bring them to life. AI is my collaborator, not my creator. When I work with AI, I approach it the same way I would approach a professional producer, arranger, or studio band. I provide detailed creative direction: the melody, the tempo, the genre, the emotional tone, the instrumentation, the structure, the placement of the intro, verses, choruses, bridge, solos, harmonies, dynamics, and even the subtle details that shape the listener's experience. If I sat in a recording studio with a group of talented musicians, I would give them those same instructions. I would sing the melody I hear in my head. I would explain how I want the drums to build, where the strings should enter, how the guitar should respond to the vocal, and how the bridge should create emotional tension before the final chorus. Those musicians would contribute their technical skill to realize my artistic vision. Working with AI is fundamentally no different. The creative decisions remain mine. The artistic vision remains mine. The melodies are mine. The lyrics are mine. AI simply becomes another highly capable musician, one that can instantly interpret my direction and help transform ideas into finished recordings. Throughout history, every technological advancement in music has faced skepticism. Multitrack recording, drum machines, synthesizers, digital workstations, Auto-Tune, MIDI sequencing, and virtual instruments were all criticized by some as diminishing authenticity. Yet each became another tool available to artists. None replaced creativity; they expanded what creative people could accomplish. Artificial intelligence represents the next evolution of that process. I don't view AI as a replacement for musicians. I view it as a collaborator that allows independent songwriters like me to produce music that might otherwise require access to an expensive studio, multiple session musicians, producers, arrangers, engineers, and substantial financial resources. The heart of a song has never been the technology used to record it. The heart of a song is its story, its emotion, its melody, and its ability to connect with listeners. Those are human creations. If an artist conceives every lyric, every melody, every arrangement, and every emotional nuance, then AI is not creating the music, it is helping realize the artist's vision, much like an orchestra performing a composer's score or a producer helping an artist shape an album. For me, AI is not the songwriter. I am. AI is simply the newest member of my band. That said, my appreciation for AI as a creative collaborator should never be mistaken for a lack of appreciation for human musicians. Quite the opposite. I have tremendous respect for the talent, creativity, and artistry that musicians bring to the creative process, and I welcome the opportunity to collaborate with them whenever the opportunity arises. Whether my songs are brought to life through AI, a solo pianist, a guitarist, a full studio band, or an orchestra, my goal remains exactly the same: to share the music I hear in my mind with the world as faithfully and authentically as possible. Every collaboration, whether with people or with technology, is simply another path toward realizing that vision. After all, the listener doesn't connect with the tools that were used to make a song.
